Westboro Church

It was a regular Monday morning when students were greeted with a shocking surprise. Signs were being waved in the air, police cars blocked the street, and school staff ran around in frenzy.

It was total chaos.

The “lovely people” who were holding signs and causing the mess are the infamous Westboro Baptist Church. They were recognized on the news because they participate in horrific acts such as bombarding military funerals and saying things like “thank goodness God killed these murderous soldiers,” and plenty more ugly statements.

Their main location is in Topeka, Kansas; however, they travel around the country.

A common “conspiracy” is that the members are actually a hate group disguised as a church to avoid paying taxes, which doesn’t seem that far fetched.

This same church was protesting next to South Broward. The hate group was just overall condemning homosexuality and believing in things such as anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.

After interviewing multiple students for their opinion on this event, none of them were in support of this self-proclaimed church.

“I think it’s obnoxious that these people are trying to condemn our lifestyle when we are just kids and still developing our own identity,” said Tyreke Vassell.

“It’s honestly pointless. We are still going to do what makes us happy, not live uncomfortably because we’re supposedly committing sin,” said Britney Clark.

“They should honestly get a life because going to schools and funerals to harass people with no remorse is honestly psychopathic and unethical,“  said Maria Gonzalez.

Westboro Baptist Church has not come to Florida since the incident.
