The Lies Beneath COVID-19

2020 has been very life changing for many people. Many of our routines have changed drastically, including being instructed to self-quarantine, streets being empty, new curfews being introduced, having to wear a mask whenever you leave your house, etc. This is causing many people to become stressed and overwhelmed, making them vulnerable to the spread of false information. Since there are so many false rumors and lies, below is a debunking list of rumors regarding COVID-19 to provide clarity for confused news consumers.

Lie #1: The coronavirus is a lie

Many people still think the coronavirus is a hoax and that  the government trying to control people by keeping them inside. But, why would the government keep people indoors? Many people are losing money, business, etc., and the government itself is losing money.

Lie #2: Hydroxychloroquine will cure the coronavirus

The effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine on COVID-19 hasn’t been fully proven, yet many government advisers are trying to push the idea that the chemical is a viable treatment for the virus. In reality, many organizations have confirmed that they have not yet found a cure for coronavirus.

Lie #3: The virus is contained, says Trump and advisers

This is false. People are still constantly being infected and dying from this disease. Also, most, if not all, of the world is infected and have shut down to slow further infection.

Lie #4: A spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry suggested on twitter that the U.S. Military brought coronavirus to the city of Wuhan.

It has already been proven that the virus came from bats in a market in Wuhan, China. Additionally, many people who contracted the disease worked in or went to the market that sold bats.

Lie #5: On March 10th, Trump said that America is prepared for the coronavirus, and that it will go away if we just stay calm.

We were not prepared. We are running out of many essential supplies for protecting against this virus such as masks, hand sanitizer and many other cleaning products. These products are also very important to supply hospitals and other essential businesses, but there have been many shortages of these supplies.

Lie #6: Trump continued, adding that “you have thousands or even hundreds of thousands of people that get better, just by sitting around — and even going to work — some of them go to work. But they get better.”

This statement is saying that, if you do have the coronavirus, that going to work will help. But, by going to work, this could cause a larger amount of people to become infected and even die. Sure, maybe rest would help fight it—but going to work and claiming that thousands of people do this to recover is false information.

Lie #7: Chlorine helps treat the coronavirus

Chlorine has not been proven to help by the FDA, meaning: don’t start drinking chlorine unless the FDA approves it!

So, in conclusion, now you know some of the lies and hoaxes that have been spread regarding the coronavirus pandemic.
