Amazon’s smart speakers, Alexa, has reportedly been malfunctioning, but in a very unsettling way.

Alexa has reportedly been “laughing at owners” of the device without being told. The device is supposed to respond to user requests when asked a question or told to do something such as, “turn the lights on,” or “play music.” Lately many users have experienced a short, child-like laugh come from the speaker, without being prompted.

Amazon has come out to say the device can mistakenly hear, “Alexa, laugh.” The company has stated they are working on fixing the issue by changing the phrase to, “Alexa, can you laugh?”

Other users have also reported their Alexa has stopped responding to requests and shutting down. A video was posted to YouTube of a woman asking Alexa if it was connected to the CIA. In response the speaker shut down. After being asked a second time, the speaker again shut down.

In recent events of the malfunctioning speakers, questions continue to rise about whether Alexa is something more than just a friendly, home assistant.
