A sign hangs on Mr.Rodriguezs board encouraging people to join multicultural club for its benefits. He wants people of different lorigins to be able to help each other in tutoring and English skills.

Multicultural Club/Latinos in Action and the Cultures of South Broward

Multicultural Club and Latinos In Action are a class and a club here at South Broward ran by Mr.Rodriguez. These activities are a way for the cultures of South Broward to show its colors.

Latinos in Action has been a class for Mr.Rodriguez during 3rd and 7th period for 4 years now.

The point of LIA is to help students learn leadership skills for college by going to Oakridge and tutoring little kids once a week or doing community service projects. LIA also prepares Latinos from all over the world in different schools for college and career readiness.

Multicultural club attends every Wednesday and for 3 years he was been helping students gain connections with other students and learn also help them in their language skills.

Multicultural club is open to anyone to join and you are able to gain service hours by doing community projects and also learn about the other members culture.

Some of the community projects done are going to Publix and getting food for the harvest drive, beach cleanups, escorting parents during family nights and helping out Latinos in Action at McArthur High during their Mustang Fest!

Amber Cazacu is a 9th grader here and supports her Romanian roots by embracing her culture and supporting her teams. While she may not be a member of Multicultural club she wishes she could join but due to her busy schedule she is unable to.

Ethan Lacouty is another 9th grader from Haiti and sees his culture in Little Haiti through the restaurants that serve a common dish of “rice with spinach, beans and shrimp.”

Lacouty likes being Haitian because he is able to represent his colors (red and blue) during Haitian Flag Day on May 18th.

Dafne Ostermuncher joined Multicultural club because she love loves to meet people from different backgrounds.

Ostermuncher was born and raised in Venezuela but her dad is German and her mom is Uruguayan. She sees her roots in the Latinos here at South Broward who make her feel at home.

Ostermuncher’s favorite part about being Venezuelan is how “we like to dance, even if some of us don’t even know how to.”

Leyla Kayan is another member of multicultural club. She is Turkish and loves to be able to go to Turkey and visit family.

Kayan said how, “I don’t have one favorite part about being Turkish. There are so many thing to like about being from Turkey.”

Daniela Garcia is the president of Multicultural club and she has been in the club for 3 years and this is her final year before she graduates.

She ran for president because she feels like she will be able to run the club from her previous experience in the club. Her plans for Multicultural club this year are to have more community events with the members.

Just because Latinos in Action is a class for Latinos/Latinas at South Broward doesn’t mean that people can know about the influence of it in our school community.

Multicultural club also may seem exclusive to people who have to be from another country but as long as there is a desire to learn about other people’s culture then you can join.
