All I Want for Christmas is : Global LGBTQ+ Rights

Every year we make a list of the gifts we wish to receive for Christmas. For many, the ideal Christmas gift consists of a new phone or money. But, for Palm Beach Central High School Junior Camryn Hewitt, what she wants something rather unusual: Globalized marriage rights.

“I definitely want the rights to marry whoever you want,” said Hewitt

Globalized marriage rights is especially important to Hewitt because she herself resides in the LGBTQ+ community. When traveling in the future she must keep in mind exactly where “allows her”.

“There are so many countries where you can be killed just for being gay,”.

“I’d fear for my life if I stepped foot into a country that doesn’t allow same-sex marriage” Said the 17-year-old.

‘It hurts to see other people to get killed because of who they choose to love”.

Hewitt definitely sees some countries who have currently banned same-sex marriage changing their laws as the world drives more into global activism.

“I think we’re doing better as a society to get more global LGBT rights but the vast majority of countries who do not allow same sex marriage areĀ  going to remain ignorant and wont change their laws ever,” she said.

Hewitt hopes that this Christmas will allow allies of the LGBTQ+ community to open their eyes to the struggle the community faces.

“It’s important to be united, whether gay or straight,” said Hewitt.” If we work together, we can accomplish anything”.
