Everything Wrong With the Capitol Riot
On January 6, 2021 while scrolling through twitter 4 tags on the capitol have been trending. As US senators gathered to certify the electoral college votes, thousands of Trump supporters, angered by the results of the election, stormed the Capitol of our country. What was seen as a protest for others was also seen as an opportunity for many to get revenge. The violence on this day has damaged many people, both physically and mentally. Among them: Capitol police officers, congressmen and women who were present and had to hide in fear for their lives, and, us, the American people.
From the news videos I’ve watched, it appears like there wasn’t much protection at the Capitol, given the large number of violent protesters congregating outside where congress members were counting ballots. Videos show rioters breaking through a gate that separated them from the capitol building, and fighting the little group of officers there. Which failed to hold them back. Those people showed no sympathy to nobody causing many deaths and major life-threatening problems.
Members of congress have shared traumatizing stories that had my heart racing just thinking about being in a situation surrounded by men and women with weapons. Protection around the capital must be strengthened to prevent incidents like this from happening. There was emotional damage done to Congressmen and women that will be stuck with them. Including, creating a sense of security to relieve some tension.
Many of these officers have done their hardest trying to protect everyone in the capitol which is amazing. However, considering that the capitol is a building with lots of importance, I feel it should be guarded that way. Having many important people all in that building without much protection seems like it’s not important as it seems. Adding more officers, better gates, and better security is a must after this riot.
The damage done to the capitol buildings is an important thing itself. Many windows were crashed, desks were broken, and rooms were destroyed. Lots of prices must be paid to restore the appearance of the capitol building. Which can cause major problems within the economy trying to collect money for it. Some important information could also have been stolen from offices which should be investigated as soon as possible before it creates bigger problems.
In the end, my overall thoughts are simply to improve protection around the capital just to prevent more incidents from happening. Second, to improve security around the building from the outside and the inside when fixing the capitol back to normal.
Lastly, I also want to provide help to those still traumatized and will be stuck with the memories of this disturbing event. This horrible experience needs to be prevent and rioters involved need to be caught to bring justice.
