Marie Harris
Marie Harris is the 10th grade counselor of South Broward High School. Born and raised in Haiti by her parents, she came to live in the U.S. at the age of 12, after her father died in his sleep.
“Dad drank a lot and told funny stories,” she said.
Even though her dad was not perfect, she still loves him a lot. Ms. Harris feels like her dad would be proud of her because she always wants to help. She feels like a parent by helping and interacting with students. She would like to have a lot of kids which is also why she became a counselor
After 18 years of not seeing her birth country, she felt a “hole in her heart” and went back to visit her mom.
Her advice to students is to spend more time with their family and not to care about material things. According to Ms. Harris “You’ll remember your parents for the moments they spent with you, for the stories they told you, and for how many memories they made with you, not for how many materials they bought you.”
“Life is like a road, it may have bumps, but you will get there,” said Ms. Harris.
