Rianna Beharre

Before COVID-19, Rianna Beharre, a freshman at Miramar High School, thought of masks as a fashion statement or for hospital purposes. She never imagined it would turn into something so widespread. It was a major surprise to her of how a common object turned into an essential item so quickly.

“I was shocked at how the use of a mask can change in a matter of two months,” she said, “but for it to change into something that can protect me and my family, I will wear it.”

Beharre lives with five family members. Her mom works outside of the home while her sisters work from home. With the virus going around her relatives wear their mask every time they go out. They are extremely cautious during this time.

“My family takes the virus very seriously, making sure we wear masks in order to keep themselves safe,” said Beharre.

She leaves her house no more than two times a week for groceries. When she does go out she makes sure she wears her mask at all times while standing six feet apart.

“I wear a mask not only because it is required, but to also protect my family especially my two little nephews,” she said.

During the pandemic, Beharre lost contact with a few friends, and she doesn’t go out with anyone. She also finds herself in awkward situations while interacting with people.

“When I usually go to stores I find myself staring and smiling at other people,” said Beharre,“ but I forget that they can’t see me smile so it just looks like I’m staring at them.”
