Smith vs Rock: Who’s Side Are You On?

The sound of the slap fills Emilia Mateo’s room as Will Smith slaps Chris Rock across the face after making a G.I Jane joke about his wife. This left thousands of people around the world shocked. 

“I personally feel like both of them were wrong,” said Mateo. “Chris was wrong for making the joke and Will was not in the wrong for defending his wife, but i personally feel like the slap wasn’t needed.”

Emilia Mateo, 17, is a junior at SBHS and feels that this situation has been blown out of proportion. She understands why Will did what he did, but feels like he did too much, in front of hundreds of people. 

“I think Will calling him out like he did would’ve been better, if he had just sat there and proceeded to call out Chris for his insensitivity towards Will’s wife,” said Mateo. 

“Jada, I love you. GI Jane 2, can’t wait to see you,” Chris joked, referring to Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. Pinkett Smith, who was struggling with alopecia, could be seen in the audience together with her husband, rolling her eyes at Rock’s comment.

“I honestly think he didn’t mind the joke at first, but after seeing how upset Jada was, he started feeling upset as well and thus overreacted,” said Emilia.
