Montero Misunderstood

On March 26, 2021, Lil’ Nas X’s song, “Montero”, premiered and quickly gained a lot of negative attention. Despite the negativity, Myca Smith, a senior from Arbeen highschool in Maryland disagrees with all the bad reviews.

“It’s almost like Lil Nas X is accepting everything that’s been thrown his way and just embracing it,” said Smith. “It’s almost like he’s agreeing with the people who tell him he’s going to hell.”

Alongside the song, a new line of limited edition shoes was released named the ‘Satan Shoe’. When asked about the limited edition shoes Smith commented, “I saw that there were Satan shoes made but that at one point in time there were also Jesus shoes”.

Many people thought that the shoes were too extreme as they supposedly had blood inside them, had a pentagram on the lace, and demonic bible verses on them.

“I don’t think I would wear either of them since both are over the top like the Jesus shoes have holy water in them while the Satan shoes have blood and honestly neither of those things appeals to me,” said Smith.

The shoe box was also covered with other demonic figures.

In certain regions, streaming platforms are not letting the song be played, and some streaming platforms may even be taking the song off their platforms.

The song receives most of its backlash from the Christian community. This could be because Lil’ Nas X is gay and his song shows many satanic figures and themes.

“I feel that the Christian community is upset because the song is homosexual in origin,” Smith shares, “While the song is about being gay, there is no reason to be offended since he is just expressing himself, his sexuality, and his struggles.”
