In honor of celebrating Black History Month, the dance team performed during lunch on February, 28 and expressed their energy and excitement through hip thrusts, jumps, and turns.
The dancers wore all black outfits with colorful pieces of fabric that they twirled around in the air during each dance. The dancers donned orange eyeshadow, red lipstick, and white lines drawn down the center of the face and above the eyebrows, similar to traditional African looks.
They had three dances to African songs such as Toque Abakua and Bundele. The first dance told a story about African history and included two dancers. The second dance was filled with feet stomping, hip movement, and spins and included eleven people. The final dance had three belly dancers who expressed their excitement through their hips and belly.
The audience was a large crowd of SBHS students, amazed at the display before them.
The dance team worked hard all month, practicing 2-3 days a week for a few hours, in order to prepare for the performance. Ms. Jones, who is also a history teacher, coached the team to success.
