The South Broward Varsity Baseball team fought off the Chaminade Madonna Lions late Wednesday night, in a nail-biting game that ended 3-2 to add anther win for the Bulldogs.

Under a vibrant sky, SBHS took to Len Koch field on Wednesday, October 23rd, in the 8th game of the fall season. An exciting game of baseball quickly escalated into an intense dog fight between the Bulldogs and the Lions.

Sophomore David Mayorga started pitching for the Bulldogs in the first inning, and allowed two runs to score in the second inning because of errors.

“When it comes to pitching all you can really do is your job,” said Mayorga, “If you do yours and you trust your teammates to make plays, then you’ve had a successful pitching outing.”

One of the Bulldog’s seasoned players, junior Jacob Laroque, seemingly kept the courage of the Bulldogs alive as they continued neck and neck with the Lions with the score remaining Lions two, Bulldogs zero.

The Bulldogs seemed unfazed as the Lions put two runs on the board, even though it meant they were down two runs.

It can be inferred Laroque is known on the team for his sporadic energizing attitude. You’ll see Jacob jumping around the dugout making sure all his teammates are ready to put their all on the field.

“Boys let’s have a great game tonight and always know where you’re going with the ball. We know their team and we can definitely beat them,” said Laroque.

The Bulldogs managed to chip at the board, and scored a run in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Logan Koch, bunted for a hit down the third baseline, which brought Laroque to the plate with two outs. Koch stole second base on the first pitch, and stole third base on a pass ball on the second pitch. Larouqe hit a hard-line drive into right field to score Koch making the score: Bulldogs-1 Lions-2

Then, Laroque took the pitcher’s mound in the top of the fourth inning. Mayorga finished a three inning Varsity start against the Lions.

Jacob attacked right away, throwing his fastballs that wisped by the batter, and his signature curveball that no one can touch. The Lions didn’t score a single run.

The extremely close battle between the Bulldogs and the Lions became even more seat gripping as the last inning rolled around. In the bottom of the seventh inning the Lions led the Bulldogs 2 to 1.

With a man on second and a man on third base, junior, William Hall, walked up to the plate with two outs and the game on the line. Hall walked up to the plate in great confidence. There was a full count as the pitcher released the final throw of the game to Hall, who hit a line drive walk off double in the left center gap to win the game, sending Koch, and sophomore Luke Vilencia home. This final action brought the bulldogs an ending victory; final score to Bulldogs-3 Lions-2.
