During all of January, South Broward’s Black Student Union (BSU) has been planning a week jam-packed with activities to celebrate Black culture and its ‘ achievements. 

“We have so much planned and we can’t wait to see the whole school participate,” said the co-president of BSU, Sacha Robertson.

Monday, February 7th BSU kicks off Black History Spirit Week with Flag Day, where students are encouraged to show and feel pride for their familial roots by either bringing a flag from any country where they have a connection or wearing their country’s colors.

“I can’t wait to wear the colors of my flag, Dominican Republic,” said Joseluis Polanco, a member of BSU.

On Tuesday, students are encouraged to come decked out in 80s, 90s, even 70s disco drip. These styles were heavily influenced by Black culture.  

“I wonder if anyone’s gonna dress up like they’re from the seventies, that would be so cool,” said Arielle Sutton, a member of BSU.

The mid-point of the week will celebrate favorite Black artists, musicians, and athletes and students can dress up as their favorite prominent Black figures, like fallen rapper TuPac, Chicago Bull’s super-star  Micheal Jordan, or Snoop Dog. During lunch, the Art Honor Society will have a table set up where they will be selling jewelry including countries with African roots.

“I’m gonna dress up as Soulja Boy, I’m excited to see what everyone has planned,” said Sacha.

Expect a flood of Dashiskis on Thursday, as the students and staff participate in Cultural Attire Day by wearing their Dashikis. 

“It will be nice to see everyone repping their backgrounds on Cultural Attire Day and showing their pride,” said Brendan O’Neal.

The week will culminate with Blackout Day on Friday. Everyone no matter what background, Black, White, Asian, Hispanic/Latino,  can show their love and support for the Black community.

“I already have my outfit planned out, I’m so excited for spirit week,” said Nyah Paise.
