If you have speech problems, Ms.Paz can help you. Not only can she help you in English, but in Spanish as well. She’s a bilingual speech therapist here at SBHS and she assists students who have difficulty with any type of speaking problem.
Paz uses standardized and informal testing to determine if the student is speech or language impaired. She also works with vocabulary skills and syntax (which are the structure of sentences).
There is no typical session. The type of therapy she does, for her, is depending on what kind of group she has. For example, pragmatics, a type of therapy, is sitting and having a conversation on a specific topic and making sure that the students are following social rules such as eye contact and turn taking.
Twenty years ago, a counselor told her about this profession. She then knew that she wanted to do this job and help kids.
“Helping students communicate effectively is such a rewarding feeling,” said Paz.
