Ava Rose Wimp-Ali, 14, was born in Hollywood Florida and is a freshman at SBHS. She first heard about the journalism program at orientation and decided to join. Due to a long-time love of reading and writing.
She enjoys reading, art, and mythology. In her spare time, she enjoys watching movies, listening to music, and painting. She is constantly working, adopting new hobbies, and is constantly trying to improve academically.
Her love of writing came from her parents. Her mother was a former university professor, and her father was a “nerd in general” so she was always surrounded by lots of books growing up. “One of my earliest memories was waking up early on Sunday mornings so I could step outside my front door and pick up the morning paper for my father. That way he could read it before CBS Sunday Morning came on. I was always excited for him to tell me the headlines – that I admittedly had no understanding of at the time – and eventually show me the comic strips and illustrations.”
She would often get in trouble when she was younger for reading during lectures she found to be boring. Not that it stopped her.
“My parents definitely didn’t love it when my teachers told them but it’s hard to tell a child to stop reading Sleeping Beauty and focus on George Washington.” said Ali ”My whole life reading and writing has always been the one constant hobby I had as I went from playing with dolls to hunching over my desk and trying -and desperately failing- to do my math homework.”.
Ali shared that her biggest stressor in life has always been school. She’s always been an anxious person but that apparently got worse once she started more advanced courses and her “imposter syndrome” kicked in. “Being a perfectionist and a procrastinator is not for the weak.” said Ali. Recently though she’s learned that while school and her education may be a massive part of her life it is not and will never be her whole life. Her goal now is to be as happy as she can be in the moment and to do things that bring her joy and not just things that might look good on a college application. Hence why she joined the Bulldog Bark.
