Laysha Dishmey, Lay for short, is a student at South Broward High School in grade 10. She was born in Dominican Republic in the capital, Santo Domingo in 2004. She immigrated to the U.S when she was about 5 or 6 and has been living here ever since. Living in America has offered her many opportunities for a better life. The pressure to do well has caused for school to become the biggest stressor in her life. She says it feels as if she’s supposed to have her whole life planned out and what she wants to do for the rest of it. On weekends Laysha likes sleeping and talking to friends. She loves staying in and watching Netflix or playing video games. Majority of her hobbies surround reading and watching anime. Her favorite book is Red, White, and Royal Blue and her current favorite anime is Promised Neverland but she says it changes often.
Laysha has encountered a big hurdle with virtual school. The hardest thing about it is the amount of work and homework and the fact that once you fall behind it becomes a slippery slope. Virtual school comes with various challenges like constant distractions, unhealthy amount of screen time, and finicky technology. Regardless of these factors, Laysha is determined to push through the difficult times in her life by trying her best.
