Yerin Mejía is a student at South Broward High School. Mejia and his parent’s were born in Honduras. However part of his life, he grew up in North Carolina from the age of 12.
“I liked living in Honduras more for the reason that I had more fun with my friends, known people and enjoyed what we did as annoying others,” he said.
Mejia began to like sports. He started playing soccer at the age of 8. In his spare time he likes to go out a lot to practice and play soccer with his friends, and aspires to one day play as a professional. Mejia started playing for a soccer team in North Carolina when he was 14 years old.
“It was very difficult for me to find the right team to play on, until I finally made the team at Alexander Middle School in North Carolina,” Mejia said. “I want to arrive and achieve my goal of being a professional footballer to help my family move forward in a better future and a more comfortable life.”
He also started working in construction with his father for one year and a half, to be able to afford soccer equipment such as soccer shoes and soccer balls. He would move blocks, move bricks and mix cement to advance the houses.
“It was very difficult for me to get used to heavy work but thinking about my dream– I never gave up.” he said.
Apart from that, Mejia’s favorite food is fried chicken with bananas, a typical Honduran food. Mejia also loves visiting Argentina, Paris (to watch soccer) and Los Angeles.
“Soccer is very important to me and I am a fan of Paris. I would like to go to the Paris stadium to see a game in person to observe the professionals and practice their movements and different techniques of each player,” Mejia said.
“I am grateful for all the sacrifices that my parents have made to move forward and for supporting me in my dream,” he said.
