It’s a problem in our society. A problem that SBHS media teacher Mrs. Pistochi plans to address. How? By reviving a decades old club – the broadcast club.
“The world needs good media people and good broadcasters to bring things back to informing the public,” said Pistocchi.
The idea had been long dormant and it was a student that proceded her to take action.
Earlier this year, Georgina Paez, a South Broward senior, approached Mrs Pistocchi with a plan to revive the long dormant Broadcast Club.
“I first got the idea after going to the annual FSPA journalism contest,” said Paez. The Florida Student Press Association allows Florida student journalists to showcase their work in a variety of categories such as writing, design, photography, art, broadcast and multimedia journalism.
“I went to a broadcast news workshop and knew I wanted to do something like that,” she said.
In the early 90s the broadcast club used to be a staple at South Broward but ended for reasons unknown. Like most new clubs that are starting off scratch, the Broadcast Club got off to rocky start.“The only problem I’ve had so far is just a delay in starting and getting things up and running” said Paez
According to Pistocchi and Paez, the South Broward Broadcast club is a space where students can learn about filming, writing scripts and have fun.
Currently they have seventeen members with nine cabinet members and are steadily growing. The club meets every Thursday afternoon from 3pm to 4pm in room 767. They plan on incorporating films of student life, broadcasting football and having interviews through the school campus. Students who are interested in joining can visit Pistocchi in room 767 to pick up a club form.
“We hope the club can run for a long time, even after I graduate,” said Paez.
