Like most of us Mrs. Kaila Bergeron has a dream. But it is not to be rich, famous, or have a huge house, although these things are nice. Her dream, to make a difference.
“I moved to Florida when I was a junior and I loved school,” said Bergeron. “School was always the place where I felt important. Where I felt I was successful, where I received praise; and I want that to be everyone’s experience.”
After graduating high school, she earned an associate’s degree at Miami-Dade Colledge in psychology. Then she transferred to Nova Southeastern University where she got her bachelors and master’s in special education. Then for 11 years she worked as a special ed teacher at Coral Glades High and Miramar High.
“I taught the students who were in the self-contained cluster with me all day and they would go out for electives only,” said Bergeron. “It was nice to have a class of students that wanted to be leaders, wanted to learn how to be leaders and plan all the fun things in the school.”
At Coral Glades High School, she was the student government adviser and taught a leadership class. In that setting, she could see how big of an impact she could provide her students in the classroom. But Bergeron wanted to take it a step forward.
“I saw the impact that I was providing for them, and I said, ‘You know what, I need to impact a bigger group of kids than the ones in my classroom,’ she said.
Bergeron loves being the last person to push a student in the right direction before entering the real world. It is the reason she became an administrator.
But she knows how much of a challenge guiding teenagers can be. She hopes that the students are being raised as good citizens by all the staff, and when they are let out into the world as adults, they do right by each other.
“Of course, I want kids that behave very well, attend all their classes and get good grades so that they can graduate, but that’s in a utopia, perfect world. Kids are kids. They make mistakes,” said Bergeron. “I hope that we’re educating the whole child mentally, physically intellectually on all different levels, for them to feel confident and go out and take over the world and do whatever they feel they need to do to make their lives better and fulfill their goals and dreams.”
