On February 30, the SBHS Boys Soccer team faced off against the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders for the District Championship. This was the team’s second time meeting, with South Broward emerging victorious in their previous game. Going into the match, the Bulldogs held an impressive 17-1 record and were favored to win, while the Raiders stood at 15-5-3.
SBHS scored first, setting the tone for a back-and-forth game. Both teams fought hard, exchanging goals until the final whistle left the score at 2-2. Joey Ben Ezra and Jimmy Asprilla each found the back of the net for the Bulldogs. Both of the Raiders goals were scored by Brock Lucena, who would later go on to be named St. Thomas’ man of the match. After two intense overtime periods, neither team could break the tie, sending the match into a penalty shootout.
With everything on the line, goalkeeper Johnathan Perez delivered under pressure, making two saves to secure the Bulldogs’ District Championship victory. Perez would later be named the man of the match.
