Making a Splash: Soak a Senior Returns

On May 7th, South Broward High School SGA hosted the annual “Soak a Senior” event during A and B lunch in the 101 courtyard. For $1 a cup, $3 a small bucket, or $5 a gallon bucket, students and faculty had the chance to drench participating seniors while enjoying an afternoon filled with laughter, school spirit, and fun memories.

Anabella Hernandez, an 18-year-old senior who loves to get involved in her school community. She is president of both the journalism newspaper and yearbook club and has come a long way since first stepping into the journalism classroom as a nervous sophomore. If you were to have told this young sophomore three years ago that she would later become president in her last year of high school, she would not have believed you, but as nervous as she was, she later came to find out that what began as a surprising challenge has sprouted to become her most memorable high school experience. “The one class or subject that surprised me my sophomore year was journalism newspaper because when I look at the word ‘journalism,’ I think of writing, and writing terrifies me because I’m not the best at it,” said Hernandez. Despite all the self-doubts, she stayed and found a place where she belonged. The club means so much to her that she hopes to continue to inspire the new club members to continue and enjoy the club just as much as she has been able to for the past three years. “I’ve made so many unforgettable friends and memories that I never knew I’d make when I first walked into the classroom. I was so nervous, but instead of the stress eating me alive, I was welcomed with open arms,” she said. Hernandez is known by many as Ana or ‘the girl with the camera,’ but by someone very close to her, she has been referred to as a “sniper” with her camera for her talent to conceal her presence while taking photos of people without them even noticing. Outside of journalism, her friends and family admire her fluffy, curled hair, which she admits can be hard to manage but is something others love to play with. “Though I hate my fluffy hair at times because it gets everywhere and is so hard to maintain, my friends and family adore my fluffy hair. They even take the initiative to play with it or run their fingers through the curls and messy ball of fluff,” said Hernandez.
