On February 20th, the South Broward High School girls waterpolo team faced a tough 22-12 loss against the formidable Westminster Academy Lions. The Lady Bulldogs had a challenging home match, starting on a bad foot and only scoring two goals in the first quarter as opposed to Westminster’s six. The team could not manage to come back from the rough start, and despite the loss, captain Sydney Mazor managed to score seven goals alongside Ayla Kayan, who scored two. Pia La Salvia, Lauren Berbeci, and Taylor De Don scored one goal each. This highly anticipated match was SBHS’s first season loss and Westminster’s fifth straight season win.

Saarah Juman-Welch is a 17 year old Junior at SBHS.
Born in Indiana, Juman-Welch moved to Florida at the age of four, first living in Davie, then coming to Hollywood. Her hobby since sixth grade has been sports photography, and thanks to journalism, she has expanded to nature photography.
“I never struggled with photography; it just comes naturally,” said Juman-Welch.
Despite this, Juman-Welch still chose journalism in hopes of improving her photography skills.
Outside of photography, Juman-Welch enjoys baking for her friends and family. Her favorite desserts to make are baklava and brownies.
“When I’m in the kitchen, I feel like I can just let go and make what my heart desires,” said Juman-Welch.
Her goals for the year are to save money to buy her own camera and win at least one All-State award at the FSPA State Convention.
“This year, I hope we can attend the actual state convention and not just submit our entries online,” stated Juman-Welch.
