February 26, 2019
Hey have you heard about the protest that happened outside of SBHS and Hollywood Hills?
The Westboro Baptist Church is an American church known for its use of inflammatory hate speech, especially against LGBTQ members , Catholics, Christians, Jews, U.S. Soldiers, and anyone against their beliefs.
The founder of Westboro is Fred Waldron Phelps Sr. ,born in 1929 and dying in 2014, was the American minister of the Westboro Baptist Church and a civil rights attorney. Phelps became known for his protests near the funerals of gay people, military veterans, etc.
His followers continued this even after his death, the most recent protests have been at highschools.
The protest that happened at our school, SBHS, and Hollywood Hills was on January 14th. Some of the signs they held up said : “Repent or Perish”, “Flee fornication”, “Why did God destroy Sodom?”. They also shared a tweet on their twitter stating they were here to teach us about their beliefs.
The protest has offended quite a few students, especially members of the LGBTQ community.
Although SBHS freshman Ya’myra Bereca didn’t walk by the protest, she wasn’t happy about it.
“I didn’t see the protest, but it was offensive,” said Bereca.
Peter Ditto, a freshmam at SBHS, become unhappy at the sight of the protest and thought the event was uncalled for.
“I feel like it was unnecessary and offensive to some people,” said Ditto. But they still continue to live their lives with pride.
But they still continue to live their lives with pride. Including Bereca, are more accepting of the members of the LGBTQ community.
“I thought it was stupid and pointless especially because I have mostly homosexual friends,” said Bereca.
Freshman Kimberly Pineda also did not agree with their message.
“They should just keep their opinions to themselves,” said Pineda
